Liang Bua Cave Flores


Liang Bua is a cave in a limestone hill in Manggarai regency, Flores. Local people are very familiar with this cave because of its huge size (50 meters long , 40 meters wide and 25 meters high ) . Because of its large size, this cave was once used as a place of worship and school.

Liang Bua has been famous worldwide since the discovery of an ancient human skull which then is called Homo Floresiensis, the size of which is very short. The brain frame size brain is only 430 cc ( compared to a normal human being who has a brain size of 1400 cc ) . This fosil is found at a depth of 6 meters. According to archaeologists, the skull has been there since 2 million to 12,000 BC or in the Pleistocene era. At a depth of 10.7 meters, ancient animal bones were also found. They are the bones of Stegodon (ancient elephant), komodo dragons, turtles, and lizards.

Culinary
No restaurants or food stalls are available here. The nearest restaurant is located in Ruteng. Merlin Restaurant in Jl. Bhayangkara, Ruteng ( 0385 to 22,475 ), serve various types of Chinese and Indonesian food. There is also Agape Cafe, located in Jalan Bhayangkara. It serves espresso, beer, and Western food , Chinese and Indonesian food.

Transportation
Liang Bua is located 14 kilometers from Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai Regency. Several rural public transportations which is called Bemo and trucks carrying passengers from Ruteng usually pass this site but their schedule is not regular. The best way to visit this cave is by using a rental car or a motor taxi. To reach Ruteng, you can take a land transportation from Labuan Bajo, Ende or Maumere. To reach Labuan Bajo, or Ende or Maumere, you can choose one of several daily flights from Denpasar or Kupang.
